Howdy! I’m Rachel and I write a short weekly email about the small delights I find in my hometown of Austin, TX. Come shoot the breeze with us!
How is your week going?! We’ve had a particularly blissful summer week—lots of swimming, lots of ice cream. June is a great because it’s not soul-numbing hot yet…am I right?
Here are some cute little Austin tidbits for you!
Took the kids to OMG Squee which was a delight. I really love their coffee flavored mochi donut which is just the right amount of bitter/sweet for me. The kids love their soft serve!
The most important development of my week, however, was a new flock of pastries at Carpenter Hotel, which if you didn’t know has a wonderful little coffee shop. I had the breakfast sandwich pictured two days in a row because it was magnificent?! The lamination on that bun! It also had the creamiest, custardy egg and a little pile of bacon and American cheese. It is my opinion that it is extremely important to use American cheese on a breakfast sandwich. There is a time and a place for aged cheddar but this is not it.
We communed with the waters of Deep Eddy Pool for my husband’s birthday and again one week later for Father’s Day. You read that right—this guy gets a continuous week of celebration every year. I don’t mind it one bit because he is the sweetest and coolest. <333
We alternated frolicking around the shallow section and plunging into the deep end. Deep Eddy feels like ice water and is exactly what one needs during Texas summer.
If you’re new to Deep Eddy: they take cards but bringing cash is much easier/faster, recreational swim doesn’t start till 10am, gird your loins for parking.
For my husband’s birthday (or Father’s Day? I honestly can’t remember) I got him this album by Being Dead. They’re Austin folks! We’ve already played this 15 times. I think you’d like it!
There have also been instances of Central Market French toast in my life, thank goodness. This is a half order, if you can believe.
An important insight for this French toast is that it is made even better by whipped cream, which you can stash in your bag and add yourself.
Have you been to this screened-in porch at the Central Library? There is two, actually, one for kids on the third floor and one for adults on the fourth floor. I’m typing this newsletter from the adults’ porch and it’s really cool and breezy up here.
Wait, would Adults’ Porch be a good band name?!

Thanks for stopping by! Here’s another Central Library trick. And! ICYMI, my pal Mindy took over Boy Howdy last week!
Hope your week is rootin’ tootin’!

God I miss that library!
Love a porch
