We spent some time in Marfa, TX this last week and it was slow and quiet and wonderful. I am in noooo way qualified to give you a comprehensive guide to Marfa, but here are a couple of things that people who know better than us told us to do that turned out to be great.

Food:
Bordo: maybe the best food I’ve eaten in a long time. They make everything homemade here, including their sorbetto, Italian sodas with straws made out of pasta (!!!) and bread for their incredible sandwiches. I had the best salad of my LIFE there.
Margaret’s : such a cool space with really, really good food. We may have eaten here three times.
(We didn’t make it to Marfa Burrito this trip but it’s also incredible.)
Coffee:
Mutual Friends: a tiny, beautiful little shop with great coffee and pastries.
Big Sandy: an old gas station turned into the neatest space with yummy coffee and a chocolate bundt cake I nearly cried about. **UPDATE** this has changed to Coyote Coffee and I haven’t tried it :-)
Bitter Sugar: a laid back little coffee shop with excellent homemade pastries. This place is small but relaxed—any time I have gone to Marfa with our kids we end up here and usually play a board game or two to decompress.
The Sentinel: coffee shop with lots of indoor and outdoor seating and ALSO the offices to a great little newspaper, The Sentinel. You won’t regret picking up a copy while you’re there.
Some good stores:
Wrong: art gallery and kooky-in-a-wonderful-way shop.
Moonlight Gemstones: just a great store with lots of fascinating rocks.
Marfa Brand Soap: a well-curated little shop with soap and pretty little home goods.
The Get Go: a tiny grocery store filled to the brim with food treasures.
Other things:
Mystery lights: go drive out to the viewing area and see them! At the very least the moon and stars in the desert are SO great.
Davis Mountains State Park: we did a hike here and it was beautiful and so pleasantly quiet.
PS most things in Marfa have limited hours! Thursday-Sunday are probably your best bet for things to be open.
PSS one of the best things about Marfa is the very kind local folks. Every store and restaurant proprietor treated us like old friends.
Have you been out to Marfa? If you have a favorite spot, please share with the class!
Hope your week is rootin’ tootin’!
